They are Mohammad the messenger of Islam (Peace be upon him), His daughter Fatemeh and twelve guides (Peace be upon them all) who were appointed by God to be the leaders and guides for the followers of Islam after the demise of the messenger. They are called the twelve Imams. The first of the 12 Imams is Ali ebn Abi Taleb (son of Abi Taleb), Cousin and Son in law of the Messenger (Husband of Fatemeh).

آیا اهل البيت همان چهارده معصوم هستند؟ آری، در زمانيكه پیامبر گرامی اسلام در قيد حيات بودند، اهل البيت شامل پنج تن آل عبا ميشدند كه عبارتند از پیامبراسلام، حضرت فاطمه، حضرت علی، امام حسن و امام حسين عليهم السلام. (حديث شريف كِسا را كه در باره پنج تن و نزول آیه تطهير است ملاحظه بفرمايید) ولی بعد از شهادت امام حُسين عليه السلام در كربلا، امامان معصوم ديگر از نسل امام حُسين بترتيب به تعداد اهل البيت افزوده شدند تا آنجا كه با تولّد امام دوازدهم یعنی امام مهدی (عليه السلام) تعداد معصومين تكميل شد و به چهارده نفر رسيد.
